Player Handbook
Play hard. Be a great teammate. Respect the game. Have fun.
Welcome to RGS!
Being an RGS player means being part of something bigger than yourself. You are part of a team, a League, and the Ramona softball community.
We want every player to improve her softball skills, build confidence, make friends, learn how to be a great teammate, and leave the field excited to come back.
What RGS Expects From Every Player
Give Your Best Effort
You don't have to be perfect. We do expect you to work hard, stay engaged, practice with purpose, and keep trying when something is difficult.
Be a Great Teammate
Encourage your teammates, celebrate their successes, help them after mistakes, and remember that everyone contributes to the team.
Be Coachable
Listen when coaches are teaching, ask questions when you don't understand, and be willing to try new positions, drills, and techniques.
Show Respect
Treat teammates, coaches, opponents, umpires, volunteers, families, and League facilities with respect.
Be Prepared
Arrive on time with the equipment, uniform, water, and attitude you need to participate safely and successfully.
Have Fun
Softball should be challenging and competitive, but it should also be fun. Enjoy your teammates, celebrate progress, and make memories.
Respect the Game
How you behave when things don't go your way says just as much about you as how you behave when you win.
✓ Treat opponents with respect.
✓ Respect umpire decisions.
✓ Listen when coaches are speaking.
✓ Win with humility.
✓ Lose with class.
✓ Never intentionally embarrass or put down another player.
✓ Represent RGS positively at home and away fields.
Being a Good Teammate
Every player will have great games and difficult games. Every player will make mistakes. Great teams support one another through both.
Celebrate your teammates when they succeed. Encourage them when they struggle. Never make fun of another player's ability, mistake, position, playing time, or performance.
Positions & Playing Time
Part of developing as a softball player is learning different positions and responsibilities. Your coach may ask you to play somewhere new or work on a skill that feels unfamiliar.
Be willing to learn. Your value to your team is not determined by one position, one spot in the batting order, or one game.
Practice With Purpose
Attendance & Communication
Teams depend on players showing up. Players should attend scheduled practices and games whenever possible.
If you cannot attend, your parent or guardian should notify the coach as early as possible so the team can plan accordingly.
Dugout Expectations
✓ Encourage your teammates positively.
✓ Keep the dugout organized and safe.
✓ Handle bats and equipment responsibly.
✓ Listen for coaching instructions.
✓ Be ready when it is your turn to bat or take the field.
✓ Clean up after your team before leaving.
Speak Up When Something Is Wrong
If you are hurt, feel sick, become overheated, or don't feel safe, tell your coach or another trusted adult right away.
Players should never feel pressured to hide an injury or continue playing when they believe something is wrong.
Bullying & Harassment
Bullying, harassment, intimidation, threats, hazing, name-calling, deliberately excluding teammates, or repeatedly putting another player down are not acceptable at RGS.
This expectation applies at practices, games, tournaments, team activities, in the dugout, and in team-related electronic or social media communications.
If another player is being treated badly, don't join in. Tell a coach, parent, or another trusted adult so they can help.
Social Media & Team Communication
The same standards of sportsmanship and respect that apply on the field also apply online.
✓ Never bully or embarrass another player online.
✓ Do not post threatening, insulting, or inappropriate comments about teammates, coaches, opponents, umpires, or volunteers.
✓ Respect the privacy of other players and families.
✓ Remember that posts, photos, messages, and videos can be shared beyond their intended audience.
Take Care of Your Gear
Players are responsible for treating personal, team, and League equipment appropriately.
✓ Return shared equipment to the proper location.
✓ Never throw helmets, bats, or other equipment in anger.
✓ Tell a coach if equipment appears damaged or unsafe.
✓ Help keep the dugout and field areas clean.
Respect League Facilities
Our fields and facilities are shared community spaces. Every player can help take care of them.
Pick up trash, respect dugouts and equipment, follow field rules, and leave the facility as good as or better than you found it.
Respect the Umpires
Umpires are an important part of the game. Players are expected to respect their decisions even when they disagree with a call.
Players should not argue calls, make disrespectful comments, gesture at officials, or attempt to embarrass an umpire. Questions regarding calls or rules should be handled appropriately by the coaching staff.
Winning, Losing & Learning
We play to compete, and it's okay to want to win. But one game's score does not define you as a player or as a team.
Learn from losses, stay humble after wins, and focus on the things you can control: your effort, preparation, attitude, and how you treat the people around you.
Mistakes Are Part of Softball
Every softball player strikes out. Every fielder makes errors. Every pitcher throws balls. Every catcher misses pitches.
What matters is what you do next. Reset, learn from it, support your teammates, and get ready for the next play.
Representing Ramona Girls Softball
When you wear an RGS uniform, you represent your team, your League, and the Ramona community.
Whether you are at our home fields, visiting another league, participating in a tournament, or attending a team activity, we expect RGS players to represent the League with sportsmanship, respect, and pride.
Talk to Your Coaches
As players get older, learning to communicate respectfully with coaches is part of becoming an athlete.
If you have a question about a position, a skill you're working on, or how you can improve, it's okay to ask your coach. Coaches want players to learn and grow.
What Kind of Teammate Will You Be?
As an RGS player, I will:
✓ Treat my teammates with kindness and respect.
✓ Listen to and respect my coaches.
✓ Respect opponents and umpires.
✓ Be willing to learn and try new things.
✓ Take responsibility for my attitude and actions.
✓ Help keep my team and facilities safe and clean.
✓ Show good sportsmanship whether we win or lose.
✓ Speak up if I am hurt or feel unsafe.
✓ Represent Ramona Girls Softball with pride.
For Parents of Younger Players
We encourage parents and guardians of our younger players to review this handbook with their child. The goal is not for young players to memorize rules, but to help them understand what it means to be safe, respectful, coachable, and supportive teammates.
Play Hard. Be Kind. Love the Game.
Your coaches can teach you how to throw, hit, field, pitch, catch, and run the bases. The teammate and person you choose to be is up to you. Make your team proud, make yourself proud, and enjoy every opportunity you get to play.
